Need for Speed Heat is a racing game set in Palm City, a fictionalised version of Miami, Florida, and its surroundings. However, the in-game terrain has a varied landscape, including hilly hills, thick woods, and vast fields. Unlike Need for Speed Payback, the game does not include a 24-hour day-night cycle, although players may alternate between day and night. During the day, players may participate in sanctioned racing events, which provide cash for new vehicles and improvements. Players may participate in illegal street racing during the night, earning REP. Racing at night will draw the notice of a renegade police task team that patrols Palm City’s streets and is charged with shutting down street racing, which may lead to players risking their earned reputation against the police or losing their riches in handcuffs. Pursuits in Palm City may occur during the day or at night. However, the reaction of the Palm City Police Department varies based on the period. Players acquire a reputation by partaking in quests, with more available at night than during the day. Each heat level also determines how much a player’s gained rep for the current night session will be doubled if they reach a safehouse or garage.
